GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A freeway construction project on the Loop 101 in the West Valley will make it much easier for people heading to and from events at the University of Phoenix Stadium and Jobing.com Arena.
That includes, of course, the Arizona Cardinals football games and the Super Bowl in 2015.
Currently, there are four exits from the stadium parking lots to the Loop 101, Northern Avenue, Glendale Avenue, Bethany Home Road and Camelback Road.
"We're getting people in and out of there in about an hour's time," said Glendale transportation system manager Trevor Ebersol."
So, a fifth HOV exit and on-ramp at Maryland Avenue is being added. HOV rules are not in effect on the weekends, allowing anyone to use the new ramps.
Construction of the new ramps began in October.
"We've been working very hard to get this done by late spring," said Doug Nintzel with the Arizona Department of Public Transportation. "There will be no question about it heading into the Arizona Cardinals season for the coming year and then also the big game, Super Bowl 49 in 2015."
While the eyes of the world will be watching how the Valley handles the big game, traffic experts will have their eyes fixated on monitors that show real-time traffic conditions. If the staff sees any problems, they can remotely control traffic lights and traffic flow to the new ramp.
