PHOENIX -- A motorcycle rider is dead after colliding head-on with an SUV that was making a turn.

It happened at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday at 59th Avenue and Indian School near Maryvale Municipal Golf Course.

According to police, Thomas Patrick Nickel, 63, was riding his motorcycle north on 59th Avenue and  was apparently trying to beat the light.

A GMC Yukon was turning left from southbound  59th Avenue onto Indian School Road. Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the driver, a 29-year-old man, "failed to yield and turned left in front of [Nickel] ...."

Nickel was wearing a helmet, but the rider died at a local hospital.

The driver of the Yukon was not injured.

"There were no indications of impairment observed and all of the passengers in the vehicle were properly restrained and no injuries were sustained," Thompson said an email to media outlets.

It's not clear if the driver of the Yukon will be cited. The investigation is ongoing.

The intersection of 59th Avenue and Indian School Road was closed for hours overnight but reopened in time for the Friday morning commute.
