PHOENIX -- Several residences went up in flames in Phoenix Monday evening.

The group of structures (a home with multiple residences/apartments attached to it) is located near Southern and 35th avenues. The first-alarm fire broke out shortly after 8:30 p.m.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the studio-type apartments on the property were believed to be occupied by up to six people. All of them are safe and accounted for.

One of those residents, who is in a wheelchair, said he is just thankful to have made it out.

"When I came out the door, it wasn't on fire," he said. "But that mattress was leaning up against the porch up front, and I think someone lit it on fire, and it spread up to the patio roof. And when it did that, it just got real, real hot and it just took off."

"Just all the flames were really high," said another resident. "A good 30 to 40 feet in the air."

Heavy smoke was blowing into the nearby residential neighborhoods, but no area evacuations were ordered.

More than a dozen units responded to the fire.

The cause remains under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting those displaced in the fire.
