MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police said they arrested a man Tuesday night after he attempted to avoid officers by running through a local neighborhood.
According to police, the incident began when an officer went to stop a vehicle for a civil traffic violation just before 9:30 p.m.
The driver allegedly refused to stop, but a short time later the passenger jumped from the vehicle. The passenger, 27-year-old Estevan Baumea Lopez, was quickly taken into custody on two felony warrants.
Police lost sight of the vehicle as it sped through neighborhood streets, but they eventually found it abandoned in a cul-de-sac near Center Street and Broadway Road.
Police set up a perimeter in the area, and began receiving calls from residents saying a man was jumping fences and running through back yards.
About an hour into the search, the suspected driver reportedly jumped over a wall and tried to enter a vehicle parked on the street.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jose Enrique Baumea, was spotted by a gang detective who subsequently shot Baumea with a Taser as he attempted to flee.
Baumea was taken into custody, and then transported to a hospital for an evaluation.
He is now facing charges of unlawful flight from law enforcement, residential trespassing, and manipulating a car door handle.
