MARICOPA, Ariz. – A 25-year-old Maricopa man faces a manslaughter charge after his 6-year-old son died following a rollover crash Friday evening.

According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, a 1991 Toyota truck driven by Jose Espinoza was traveling northbound on Ralston Road north of Peters and Nall Road outside of Maricopa when it veered off the roadway to the right.

When Espinoza attempted to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway, it flipped and rolled several times.

PCSO spokesman Tim Gaffney said Espinoza and his son, Isaiah, were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle.

Espinoza was transported to a local hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Isaiah received life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maricopa Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Gaffney said Espinoza was suspected of being impaired by both alcohol and marijuana at the time of the collision. Blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Arizona Department of Public Safety to be tested.

Sheriff Paul Babeu said detectives will submit charges to the Pinal County Attorney's Office and request that Espinoza be charged with manslaughter for the death of his son.

Espinoza was arrested for possession of marijuana in 2011.
