PHOENIX -- A man has died after he was struck by a car in a Phoenix intersection late Friday night.

Joseph Slaven, 45, was reportedly crossing in the intersection of 36th and Northern avenues shortly before 11 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound Chevrolet Cavalier.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the car had the right-of-way.

According to police, Slaven may have been using his cellphone and not paying attention to traffic.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Thompson said the driver, a 22-year-old man, remained at the scene. He and his two passengers, a 19-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, were not injured.

Police are still investigating the crash and said it is unknown if impairment was a factor.
