CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A man stole an SUV on Wednesday outside a Chandler elementary school with a girl inside, according to Chandler police.
Just before 5 p.m. police said a woman pulled up to Kyrene Del Cielo Elementary School and jumped out of her vehicle.
Apparently she left the keys in the SUV because police told 3TV that 40-year-old Jason Howell was able to jump in and drive away.
As Howell was pulling away from the school, a 12-year-old girl who was in the back seat of the SUV managed to jump out.
Police tried pulling Howell over at around 56th Street and Ray Road in Chandler. He briefly pulled into a parking lot but then drove back out onto Ray where he rammed a police cruiser. Police started chasing the stolen SUV west on Ray.
Howell finally turned into park off of 50th street north of Ray Road in Phoenix. When he realized he was cornered he once again rammed the same police car he had already hit, according to police.
His stolen SUV died after the second collision and Howell was arrested.
Police said he was extremely drunk and uncooperative. Right now he faces four felony charges including aggravated assault on a police officer.
Police said Howell could also end up facing a kidnapping charge related to the girl in the car when he allegedly stole it.
