PHOENIX -- Police are trying to figure out who shot a man who was driving his car in a Phoenix neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

It happened at about 5 a.m. The wounded man crashed his car into a fence, coming to rest under a tree in the area of 27th and Northern avenues.

The victim, a 42-year-old man, reportedly is in critical condition and, at last check, was going into surgery. Police have not been able to talk to him about the shooting.

While detectives have not said anything about the victim's injuries, they said there are at least two bullet holes in the car. Video from the scene showed what appeared to be one of those holes in the back passenger-side door.

The Mercedes was towed from the scene at about 8:30 a.m., more than three hours after the shootings and subsequent crash.

Investigators have very little to go on at this point. There were reports of gunshots in the area before the victim crashed, police have not been able to find any witnesses.

Because detectives do not know the origin of the shots, they are not sure if the victim was targeted or if this was a random incident. They have not ruled out the possibility of road rage.

Shell casings were discovered at a car wash about a block away from the crash scene. Detectives are trying to determine if those casings belong to the bullets that hit the car and wounded the victim.

There are no suspects at this time.
