PEORIA, Ariz. -- One man is dead and his brother is in the hospital after a late-night family fight took a violent turn at a Peoria apartment complex.
A relative who did not want to be identified told 3TV's Tess Rafols that the victims are brothers and that one shot the other. Police later confirmed that.
It happened in a second-floor unit in the Lake Pleasant Village Apartments at 99th Avenue and Beardsley Road. Residents said they heard screaming coming from the apartment shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the public information officer for the Peoria Police Department, the apartment belongs to 36-year-old Sunny Sanchez. His mother and older brother were visiting from California when the two men got into a fight and things took a deadly turn.
Police said Sanchez shot his older brother three times. He then went into a back bedroom where he shot himself. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The older brother, who is 45, is in critical condition at a local hospital.
The men's mother and Sanchez's two roommates reportedly witnessed the entire confrontation. They were not hurt.
Detectives have not released the name of the older brother.
Investigators were on the scene all morning, working to piece together the events that led up to the shooting. Police said it appears the brothers may have been arguing over a previous event involving Sanchez's girlfriend.
