PHOENIX -- A man who told police he was trying to cut off his mother's head when he attacked her at a Phoenix restaurant last year has been sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison.

Michael Lee Hansen, 36, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted second-degree murder in June.

Hansen was arrested in July 2013 following the attack at the Sakura Sushi and Steakhouse near Mayo Boulevard and Scottsdale Road.

According to police, Hansen punched his mother, knocked her unconscious and cut her neck and hands with a knife. He told police he hit his mother and was attempting to cut off her head.

His mother suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Detectives said the attack allegedly stemmed from pornographic photographs of him.
