PHOENIX -- A man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in connection with an armed robbery and a carjacking that involved the son of fitness pro Chris Powell.
Jasper Jay Stewart, 33, is a documented member of the Aryan Brotherhood/Nazi Lowriders gang and committed the offenses while on probation for four previous offenses ranging from drug possession to credit card theft, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
On Sept. 7, Stewart approached an SUV with Powell's young son and his nanny inside and told them, "Get out of the car or I will kill you."
The woman was able to get the child out of the vehicle safely and Stewart drove away.
Mesa police responded to the victim's 911 call and used OnStar to locate and disable the SUV, which was found less than three miles away.
Police found Stewart and took him into custody.
Police were able to connect Stewart to an Aug. 28 armed robbery. Authorities said he used a simulated weapon to threaten a woman as she was getting into her car after leaving a Mesa Starbucks. Stewart demanded her cash and credit cards and grabbed her cellphone before fleeing on foot.
Stewart was sentenced to an 18-year prison term for the armed robbery count to be served concurrently with a seven-year sentence for trafficking in stolen property. For the carjacking offense, he was sentenced to concurrent terms of 10 years for robbery and seven years for theft of means of transportation.
"Thanks to diligent police work and aggressive prosecution, we have successfully cut short the criminal career of this repeat offender," said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. "His prison sentence represents an appropriate and just result for the harm he has caused our community and underscores our commitment to maintaining public safety."
Powell is a frequent guest on "Good Morning! Arizona" and is the star of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition."
