PHOENIX – A man riding a motorized scooter died after being hit by a vehicle at Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Phoenix police said the man in his 70s attempted to cross the roadway eastbound in the north crosswalk at approximately 2 p.m. when he was struck by a southbound Jeep Cherokee.

Sgt. Trent Crump said the operator of the scooter was crossing the intersection against the traffic signal light.

The man was transported to a local trauma center but died as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed, according to Crump.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision.
