TUCSON, Ariz. – An off-duty Tucson police officer was a victim of a road rage incident Wednesday night, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
The officer was driving an unmarked vehicle at around 11 p.m. when he merged onto Aviation Highway and nearly collided with a pickup truck driven by Eric Santos, 38, according to sheriff's spokesman Deputy Tracy Suitt.
Santos closely followed the officer through the downtown area and onto westbound Interstate 10. Suitt said as the officer slowed down to exit I-10, Santos deliberately rammed and pushed his vehicle.
The officer called 911 to report the incident with Santos still behind him.
When the officer reached the intersection of Thornydale Road and Cortaro Farms Road, he had a red light. Suitt said to avoid a confrontation with Santos, the officer made a left turn on the red light after checking to make sure there was no traffic approaching the intersection.
When Santos reached the intersection, he turned left and collided with a southbound car driven by a female.
Deputies arrived on scene shortly after the collision. Santos and the female driver were transported to a local hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
Charges are pending.
