PHOENIX (AP) -- A man who allegedly broke into a Phoenix home and assaulted a woman before being shot has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Michael Lewis appeared at his court arraignment Thursday in a wheelchair and plastic body brace.

He was in a hospital for nearly a month as he recovered from a gunshot wound.

Phoenix police say the 20-year-old Lewis was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and residential burglary.

Lewis was shot after the 47-year-old homeowner says he broke into her home with a gardening tool on May 6.

The homeowner says she saw Lewis looking through the window, armed herself with a handgun and hid in the bathroom.

Court records show the woman told police that Lewis followed her into the bathroom and punched her in the face.
