MESA, Ariz. -- A 52-year-old Mesa man was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday morning while on his scooter.

A red, four-door sedan was reportedly traveling east on Broadway Road around 7:40 a.m. and for unknown reasons failed to stop at the red light at the Ellsworth Road intersection. The sedan collided with the scooter, which was stopped in the median lane.

The man on the scooter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom said the sedan then struck a pole before coming to a rest.

The 43-year-old female driver was extricated from the car and flown to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center with injuries that appeared to be life-threatening, Hegstrom said.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
