CASA GRANDE, Ariz. - A woman died after the tandem bike she was riding was hit by a van.
Just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, a tandem bicycle ridden by Brian Pangburn, 46, and Pam Pangburn, 47, was heading north on Trekell Road toward Casa Grande when a 1994 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by J.B. Gore, 86, of Arizona City, struck the rear of the bicycle while heading in the same direction.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Trekell and Peters roads.
Both Pangburns were wearing helmets and using a red strobe light to warn drivers.
Pam was seated on the rear of the bicycle and suffered severe injuries to her chest and head and was taken by ground ambulance to Casa Grande Medical Center. She was pronounced dead a few hours later at the hospital.
Brian was the driver of the bicycle and suffered substantial chest injuries and was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. His current condition is not known.
According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, Gore did not show signs of impairment at the scene and consented to give blood for testing.
Shortly after the accident, Francis Gibson, 77, who witnessed the crash, was seen going through the victims' belongings.
Gibson was asked to leave and was arrested by Casa Grande police when he did not comply.
