TUCSON, Ariz. -- A man who illegally entered Arizona was rescued after falling from a mountaintop near Nogales Monday night, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
A CBP helicopter crew spotted what appeared to be a flicker of light on the west side of Mule Ridge at approximately 8:45 p.m. The flicker turned out to be a signal for help from the injured man.
The man had fallen approximately 100 to 150 feet from a nearby mountaintop, according to CBP officials. Due to the ruggedness of the terrain, a UH-60 Blackhawk crew was called to assist with the extraction.
An EMT-trained agent was lowered to help the man. The agent reported that the man had possible internal bleeding, difficulty breathing, was coughing blood, had a severely fractured ankle, and lacerations to his face and back.
The man was hoisted into the helicopter then transported to a waiting ambulance. Based on the seriousness of his injuries, he was transferred to a medical helicopter and transported to a Tucson-area hospital.
