TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A 23-year-old man faces a sentence of natural life in prison for the fatal beating and stabbing of a 7-year--old Ajo girl who also was raped.
A Pima County Superior Court judge on Monday sentenced Loretto "Kyle" Alegria for the 2009 killing of Rhia Almeida.
The girl was on a playdate with Alegria's little brother. Her body was left in a wash.
The judge also sentenced Alegria to two consecutive prison sentences totaling 52 years. Those sentences were imposed for his convictions for kidnapping and sexual contact with a minor under the age of 15.
Alegria had faced a possible death sentence, but the jury that convicted him decided against it after hearing mitigation testimony.
