PHOENIX – A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a hit-and-run that left an 11-year-old Chandler boy dead.
Ronald Chavez, 25, was sentenced Monday morning for leaving the scene of a fatal accident as well as two other criminal cases involving drug offenses. He received a five-year term for each of those, which will run concurrently. The seven-year sentence will run consecutively to the other term.
Chandler police said Aaron Arnold was riding his bike across Arizona Avenue near Knox Road outside of the crosswalk when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by Chavez on June 29, 2012.
Chavez fled the scene with the boy and his bike still in the road, according to witnesses. Police said he abandoned his truck at an apartment complex near Chandler Boulevard and Alma School Road but returned with his father a while later and spoke with investigators.
Chavez was arrested on a felony charge of failure to stop for an accident involving death.
