PHOENIX -- A man found dead in the lake at Cortez Park on Monday afternoon, has now been identified as 40-year-old Christopher Chee.

The park is at 35th and Dunlap Avenues.

Police say that according to witnesses, Chee was in the park Sunday, using methamphetamine and alcohol when he stated he was going swimming in the park lake. Chee was reportedly warned against it, but he entered the water.

Police say those with him hid Chee's clothing in a nearby bush so it would not get stolen and went home for the evening.

Witnesses returned Monday afternoon to look for him. When they couldn't find him, they searched in the lake, where they discovered Chee's body. Witnesses removed the body and called 911. There were no signs of trauma to the body.

Personnel from the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and will determine the cause of death.
