MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. -- A 24-year-old man drowned Saturday afternoon while tubing down the Salt River.

Deputies with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded after witnesses said there was a possible drowning near the Mud Cliffs.

Deputies performed life saving measures on the man, but when medical personnel arrived they pronounced him dead.

Sunday night, MCSO deputies identified the man as John George of Chandler.

Witnesses told deputies George had been floating down the river when he became separated from his group.

He reportedly let his raft go and attempted to swim upstream.

Witnesses said George appeared to get tired and eventually went under water. It’s believed he was under water for about four minutes before his body was pulled from the water.
