MESA, Ariz. -- Police have arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of a man at a Mesa apartment complex near Main Street and Alma School Road.
David Anthony Stokes, 48, was arrested early Sunday morning. He faces one count of second-degree murder.
Stokes told police that he and the victim had been drinking on Saturday and the other man slapped Stokes' girlfriend on the buttocks, which angered him.
Police said Stokes stabbed the victim with a knife. The man died at the scene.
According to court paperwork, the victim had three stab wounds, including one near his neck.
The victim's name has not been released.
Stokes' bond was set at $270,000. He has a status conference on March 3 and a prelminary hearing scheduled for March 5.
Police said Stokes has an extensive criminal history, including arrests for assault, burglary, dangerous drug sales and forgery. He has served time in an Arizona prison.
