MESA, Ariz. -- Police believe a man shot and stabbed his mother before killing himself at a Mesa RV park Friday.
Officers responded to Mesa Regal RV Resort on Main Street shortly before 10:30 a.m. and found a woman in her late 40s with multiple wounds, according to Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato.
The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was reportedly in critical but stable condition Saturday morning.
Landato said there was indication that the woman was shot and stabbed by her son, 21-year-old Mark Samual Taro.
"What little information we had was from workers on site that indicated they had seen a subject running west of where we found our victim," Landato said. "Our officers began to saturate the trailer park trying to locate this subject. We weren't sure if he had made it out of the park or not."
Officers reportedly found a vacant mobile home on the west side of the park with signs of forced entry. A perimeter was established and negotiation attempts were initiated.
After a few hours without a response, officers entered the mobile home and found Taro dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Landato.
The events leading up to the incident and the motive are unknown, Landato said.
Police found few witnesses and were working to obtain search warrants Friday evening for both mobile homes involved.
"The trailer park ... is mostly a home for winter visitors, so it's sparsely populated this time of year," Landato said. "It's very large. There's a lot of vacant trailers that are on site."
Landato said Taro was an Arizona State University student and lived on campus. He was visiting his mother at the RV park.
He has no known criminal history, according to Landato.
