MESA, Ariz. -- A man is accused of killing another man on the same day he got out of prison.
Ignacio Eide Lomeli Jr., 22, was released by the Arizona Department of Corrections on Sunday.
The homicide occurred outside a residence near Broadway Road and Mesa Drive where Lomeli was gathering with relatives to celebrate his freedom.
One of those family members called police to report that Lomeli shot a man in the parking lot.
When officers arrived just after 10 p.m. Sunday, Lomeli showed them that the victim was in an SUV. Lomeli also admitted to police that he killed the man with a semi-automatic handgun but said it was in self-defense.
Police said the victim had a gunshot wound to his face and the back of his head. He had a nail gun on his lap.
Lomeli told police that he stole money from a man after punching him in the face earlier in the day. Later he said a man in an SUV was following him. Lomeli confronted that man who said he was looking for Lomeli.
According to police, Lomeli then shot the victim at point blank range.
Lomeli went to a friend's residence where he told them about the shooting and smoked methamphetamine.
His friends convinced him to turn himself in to police.
Police said Lomeli told them the victim did not get out of his vehicle or make any threatening statements. He said he shot the man after he saw what he believed was a weapon in the vehicle.
The victim hasn't been positively identified, but police said Lomeli didn't know him.
Lomeli's bond was set a $1 million at his initial court appearance Tuesday.
