PEORIA, Ariz. -- Peoria Police have arrested a man suspected of assaulting his parents and leaving his mother with injuries that would eventually claim her life.
Victor Castro, 38, was apprehended Thursday for allegedly attacking 62-year-old Fred Castro and 61-year-old Lorene Castro.
Police responded to 8815 W. Sahuaro Drive on the morning of July 6 after Lorene and Fred Castro’s nephew found them in their bedroom covered with blood.
Fred and Lorene Castro were breathing but non-responsive when authorities arrived. They were both rushed to the hospital with blunt force trauma to their heads. On July 12, Lorene Castro died from her injuries.
During the course of their investigation, authorities learned that Luis Tosky and Laura Castro were at the home on the evening of July 5 to have dinner with Fred, Lorene and Victor Castro.
At some point that night, Victor Castro asked Tosky if he wanted to smoke some of the designer drug Spice. Fred Castro became angry with his son for offering Tosky Spice, and they got into an argument.
Fred and Victor Castro also got into a second argument that night about the smell and condition of Victor’s feet.
Victor Castro was said to be upset about the arguments and spent the rest of the night in the backyard by himself.
Tosky returned to the house the following morning to go to work with Fred Castro and discovered the couple beaten in their bedroom. Victor Castro was the only person home at the time.
Laura Castro has told authorities that Victor Castro suffers from Schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder and takes court ordered medication injections. She added that Victor Castro hasn’t taken his medication in about two months, and smokes a large amount of Spice.
Victor Castro has told police that he fell asleep on a couch in the backyard after smoking Spice and woke up the next morning to find Tosky in the home.
Investigators, however, have learned that Victor Castro took his father’s truck to a convenience store early in the morning of July 6 and purchased Spice.
While searching the truck, police found a hammer that had blood on it. The hammer is consistent with the weapon used in the attack on Fred and Lorene Castro.
Police also found a bloody footprint in the home’s hallway that was similar to the shoe print patterns on Victor Castro’s shoes.
On July 10, Laura Castro and Dolores Posey visited Fred Castro in the hospital. While he couldn’t speak, Fred Castro was able to communicate by shaking his head and moving his arm. He reportedly went on to communicate that Victor Castro was the person who had attacked him.
Two other relatives who were also in the hospital room have confirmed to police that Fred Castro blamed Victor Castro.
Victor Castro has since been charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault.
