Map: Meth bust
PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office seized 20 pounds of methamphetamine and arrested the two alleged smugglers in Phoenix Tuesday.
Juan Carlos Soto-Neris, 26, and Jorge Cecilio Bernal-Araujo, 43, were apprehended near West Encanto Boulevard and 83rd Avenue.
Soto-Neris was allegedly driving a vehicle containing two large bags of meth, which narcotics detectives believe was smuggled into Phoenix from Mexico.
At the time of the arrest, both men had identification documents apparently issued in Mexico.
They were each booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on felony charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of dangerous drugs for sale, and transportation for sale of a dangerous drug.
"These arrests and seizures are leading up to an impending crackdown by this office against street level drug dealers and users," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said, citing other recent drug busts.
He said his office has seized more than 26 pounds of meth over the past five days and made several arrests in connection with a marijuana dispensary.
