PHOENIX -- A Maricopa County sheriff's detention officer has been fired after hanging from a pipe at the downtown Phoenix jail in December, causing it to break and flood the complex.
MCSO officials say Terry Wheeler was fired Jan. 27. He had been with the department for less than a year.
Sheriff's officials say the initial damage estimate from the flood is near $250,000 but could go higher.
The December flood forced the relocation of 50 inmates until floors, walls and equipment dried a few days later. Sheriff's officials say an exposed pipe on the third floor of the jail broke and leaked down two floors to the central intake area.
