PHOENIX -- 'Tis the season for holiday shopping. And that means Sheriff Joe Arpaio's posse will be out in full force to keep Valley shoppers safe.
Sheriff Joe kicked off the 20th anniversary of his Mall Posse Patrol Monday evening at Paradise Valley Mall. The posse will continue patrols at Valley malls each day until shortly after the New Year.
Posse volunteers have been patrolling the malls since 1993. "I remember in 1992 they had a lot of violence at the malls, so when I took office in 1993 I decided to mobilize the posse," Arpaio says.
To acknowledge the posse's commitment to serve and protect, Sheriff Arpaio authorized a huge sign to be hoisted and hung from the 18-wheel mobile command truck.
“This program has done so much good over the years, from locating lost children and stolen vehicles to traffic accident assists and shoplifting arrests,” Sheriff Arpaio says.
Deputies had some safety tips for shoppers: Stay as visible as you can, keep your vehicle locked up, and make sure your packages are kept out of sight.
