CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested three identity theft suspects at two different businesses on Wednesday.
An alleged identity thief was caught at a Red Robin restaurant in Chandler. In November, MCSO began an investigation into the possible theft of a man's identity after the Internal Revenue Service kept contacting the man, telling him that he had unpaid taxes.
The victim found that someone was using his information to maintain employment at the Red Robin near Price Road and Chandler Boulevard, according to the sheriff's office.
The suspect was identified Joaquin Venancio Cabrera, 21. He was arrested at the restaurant and booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on five counts of aggravated ID theft and five counts of forgery.
A second person was arrested Wednesday for similar crimes at a different restaurant. The identify theft was discovered when the victim was denied Social Security benefits due to someone using his identity for employment at Thunder Pass Food and Spirits in Mesa.
Eduardo Mexicano Canela, 39, was booked on two counts of ID theft and two counts of forgery.
During an interview with sheriff's detectives, Mexicano admitted to being in the country illegally, according to Lt. Brandon Jones. Mexicano said he had been living in the county for 12 years and paid $5,000 to cross the border.
Detectives also arrested Isidro Hilario Carcano, 29. Carcano was found to be working under a false ID. He was charged with criminal impersonation.
"This is our fifth criminal employment operation in the last 30 days involving five different business establishments with employees using false identifications," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "We will continue to crack down on this type of illegal activity. Expect more to come."
On Jan. 22, the owner of Uncle Sam's was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the trafficking of stolen ID's. On Jan. 29, a suspect was arrested at a Chili's restaurant in Mesa and two suspects were arrested at Arizona Shower Door on charges involving identity theft.
The operations Wednesday at Red Robin and Thunder Pass Food and Spirits represent the 78th and 79th criminal employment operations conducted by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
