BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- A local high school student attended the American Music Awards on Sunday as Katy Perry's guest.
The pop star personally invited Megan Squire, a senior at Verrado High School in Buckeye, to attend the awards show.
Perry discovered Squire when Verrado High students submitted a music video for "Good Morning America's 'Roar' with Katy Perry Contest."
Perry announced the contest in October, challenging high schools across the United states to create their own music video for the hit song about empowerment.
Verrado High students decided to feature Squire, saying she is the one who inspired their video.
Squire was born with Down syndrome but did not let it stop her from becoming a cheerleader.
The video took three days to produce and placed in the top five. A video from a Lakewood, Colo., high school was chosen as the winner.
