PHOENIX -- The Transportation Security Administration reportedly found a loaded gun inside a carry-on bag at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on the Fourth of July.

The Beretta Nano 9mm pistol, which was loaded with six rounds, was found around 6 p.m. at the Terminal 4 security checkpoint, according to TSA spokesman Ross Feinstein.

The firearm reportedly belonged to a 44-year-old woman who was flying to Denver.

Law enforcement confiscated the gun, and the woman was allowed to continue her flight.

Feinstein said TSA will impose a civil penalty, which is usually $3,000 for the first offense.

Firearms are permitted on airplanes but they must be unloaded and in checked baggage, and the airline must be informed.

TSA reportedly detects firearms in carry-on bags 40 to 50 times per week at airports nationwide.

Fines can range from $1,500 to $11,000 for a single civil penalty. Law enforcement may also impose criminal penalties.
