PHOENIX -- No one wants to cook (or eat!) big, heavy meals when it's hot outside. On Monday's Good Morning Arizona, Heidi Goitia took us to Andreoli's Italian Grocer in Scottsdale for some tips on summer cooking on the lighter side.
Phoenix may not have a Little Italy, but Andreoli's Italian Grocer is a great place to get a taste of the Old Country. The store serves sandwiches, salads and antipasti. Additionally, it features all kinds of imported specialty items for sale, like meats, cheese and marinated olives.
Giovanni Scorzo, chef and proprietor, is known around the store as "The King". He was born in Calabria, and grew up in Liguria, in the Northwestern part of Italy. Like his mother, whose maiden name was Andreoli, he became a chef.
His hands-on approach means no short cuts. Scorzo makes all his own bread and pastries, cannoli, tiramisu, mozzarella, ricotta, and even chocolates by hand.
On Monday, he gave us some tips on how to make a royally good pesto. For starters, he says don't use a food processor! "Actually, it's almost illegal," he laughs. "Using a food processor knife will break the basil, and will take the taste out."
Andreoli's is featured in this month's Phoenix Magazine, along with other Italian eateries. "We're not just highlighting the best restaurants here in the Valley, but we have a top ten list which is really exciting," says Craig Outhier of Phoenix Magazine. "One of the best delis in the Valley is here at Andreoli's. Hand-cured meats, wonderful cheeses, and probably one of the most colorful individuals in the Italian food scene in Phoenix."
