PHOENIX -- And they're off, like the start of a NASCAR race in order to get the best spot possible to tailgate the Cardinals' first regular season home game.
“Get here early and you get a good spot,” said long time ticket holder Clark Bell.
Although David Guzik has a better idea.
“Having a buddy who is willing to get here at 7:30 in the morning and meeting up with him, six years and he hasn't missed this spot, that's the key, to have a friend do the footwork ahead of you," said Guzik.
And to be rewarded with that perfect tailgate, it takes blood, sweat and tears. Well ok, in this heat maybe just the sweat.
“Oh yeah, a lot of work, we're here every season enjoying the game,” said Wendy Bell.
And the food at a Card’s tailgate, dogs and burgers are for amateurs, the experienced grillers cook up short ribs. Tailgating meals are planned well in advanced.
“As soon as the schedule comes out in April it's circled on the calendar,” said Dan Conger.
While a Card’s tailgate is a vast collection of strangers, wearing the red jersey makes everyone part of the family for a day.
“You never meet a stranger out here, that's the one thing I can say, everybody is very friendly, getting ready for the game and all the energy going, a lot of fun,” said Bell.
