PHOENIX -- Arizona's new immigration law is taking center stage in federal court Thursday as a judge hears arguments over whether Arizona's new immigration law should take effect July 29.
Shortly after Gov. Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1070, Phoenix police Officer David Salgado filed a lawsuit and an injunction to try and stop the law from taking effect.
A judge will not only hear that suit, but one filed by Chicanos Por La Causa.
Salgado's lawyers will argue federal law trumps state law and also that the new law will lead to racial profiling.
The state's lawyers will ask for a dismissal, countering that the suits are based on speculation.
Security was stepped up at the federal courthouse in downtown Phoenix and several protesters demonstrated in front.
Hearings on six other suits seeking to have the law thrown out are set for next week.
Meanwhile, two advocates of Aizona's immigration law are asking for the public's help.
Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever and Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu have established a legal defense fund. They anticipate a series of lawsuits against their departments over SB1070 and want to be prepared financially to fight them. For more information, visit www.bordersheriffs.com.
