PHOENIX (AP) -- Interstate 17 has partially reopened after a closure in both directions in north Phoenix due to a fatal rollover accident involving a tanker truck.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says northbound I-17 partially reopened at Jomax Road late Friday morning but that southbound I-17 remains closed at Loop 303, likely into Friday afternoon.

The one-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 5 a.m., leaving the tanker's wreckage on the median.

ADOT says southbound drivers should expect delays and consider exiting ahead of the closure by using State Route 74 to the west, which will take drivers southbound via Lake Pleasant Parkway.

According to ADOT, drivers also can take Carefree Highway to the east, then go south on local roads such as 27th Drive/North Valley Parkway and Cave Creek Road.

Southbound I-17 remains closed at Loop 303, likely into Friday afternoon.

Drivers should expect delays and consider exiting ahead of the closure by using State Route 74 to the west, which will take drivers southbound via Lake Pleasant Parkway.

PHOENIX (AP) -- Interstate 17 is closed in both directions in north Phoenix during the Friday morning commute due to a fatal rollover accident involving a tanker truck.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says one-vehicle accident that occurred shortly before 5 a.m. closed the freeway southbound at State Route 303 and northbound at Jomax Road.

Television news video showed the tanker on its side on top of the median.

ADOT says fuel or oil has spilled, and the state Department of Public Safety says an extended closure is expected.

Tweeting about the wreck, DPS Officer Carrick Cook said one of the challenges with the cleanup is the temperature of the oil. It is about 300 degrees.

The driver of the semi was killed. DPS has not released any information about him.

At this point, investigators believe fatigue was a factor in the deadly crash. They said there are indications that the semi was swerving before it crashed.

No further details are immediately available.

ADOT says motorists traveling between the Phoenix area and northern Arizona should consider alternate routes that include State Route 87 through Payson and State Route 89 through Prescott
