FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. –  Bit by bit, the Arizona Department of Transportation cleared snow-covered roadways Thursday, reopening several sections of highways running through Northern Arizona. Some areas, however, could remain closed for several days.

About 13.5 inches of snow has been recorded in the Flagstaff area so far, along with heavy winds and freezing temperatures. It's still coming down.

The Sunrise Ski Area has gotten 24 inches of snow; Parks has gotten 20 inches; Pine has gotten 16 inches; Pinetop-Lakeside has gotten 14 inches; Crown King and Show Low have gotten 13 inches each; Heber has gotten 10 inches.

Flagstaff will likely get another 2 to 5 inches of snow today. The Eastern Mogollon Rim is looking at another 3 to 8 inches.

Interstate 17 northbound reopened from milepost 299 to 340 shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.

I-17 southbound south of Flagstaff reopened earlier in the day, but the roadway remained quite slippery. Drivers were being urged to go slowly and be extremely careful.

Prior to the decision to close this heavily traveled stretch of freeway, DPS reported 80 vehicle slide-offs and more than 40 crashes due to the snowy conditions.
