PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Corrections has announced that inmate Samuel Lopez will be executed at the end of the month.
The execution is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at the Central Unit of ASPC-Florence.
Lopez broke into 59-year-old Estefana Holmes’ Phoenix apartment in 1986. Lopez raped Holmes and then stabbed her nearly two dozen times before leaving her for dead.
In an affidavit filed this past February Lopez said he was sorry for taking Holmes’ life, and claimed that he did not remember the incident. Lopez explained that his difficult childhood had led him to drink and sniff paint.
Last month, the Arizona Supreme Court issued a stay of execution for Lopez less than 24 hours before he was slated to be put to death.
His lawyers asked for the delay because of issues with Arizona’s clemency board and concerns that the new members had not been properly trained. The Supreme Court agreed that more time was required to resolve the issues.
