PHOENIX -- An injured hiker was rescued from Piestewa Peak by helicopter Friday.

Shortly before noon, Phoenix Fire Department rescue crews responded to the mountain and contacted a woman in her 20s.

According to the fire department, the woman passed out due to a medical condition and fell five feet.

Rescue crews evaluated her condition and called for a helicopter.

Rescue personnel from the Phoenix fire and police departments used a hoist system to extricate the woman.

She was reunited with family members on the ground and taken to a local trauma center as a precaution, fire department spokesman Capt. Ruben Saavedra said.

Fire officials say she had scratches and bruises.

The Phoenix Fire Department is reminding hikers to wear appropriate clothing and shoes, carry water and a cellphone, know their physical limitations, and stay on trails.
