TEMPE, Ariz. -- A tiny dog is recovering after being left for dead behind a strip mall near Southern and Mill avenues in Tempe.
A woman found the Yorkie lying on a bloody dog bed in a Dumpster on Sunday and called police.
The 2-year-old dog had on a pink studded collar but no tags or microchip.
"Her hair was sticking out, very stiff, full of blood, her eye was sitting on her cheekbone, you could see her jaw was a little bit twisted," said Kathy Swaney, who runs Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue.
"It was clearly neglected and dumped after the wounds," said Dr. Anthony Alber with Prestige Animal Clinic.
It's believed that another animal caused the dog's injuries and that she was left in this condition for about a week without medical attention, according to the dog rescue's website.
"The fact of the matter is that dog was allowed to suffer for days and then just discarded with absolutely no consideration, no feelings, no thought," Swaney said.
On Monday, the dog underwent a complicated surgery to fix her broken jaw and the eye. She faces a long recovery but has a fighting spirit.
She has a lot of willpower," said Swaney, who will be taking care of the pup until she can be adopted.
Alber can fix the physical damage and give the dog a good chance at recovery, but he is baffled as to why someone threw the dog away while it was still alive.
They will likely never know what led to the injuries, but she does have a chance thanks to people who care.
