SURPRISE, Ariz. -- To watch how furiously the fire burned after an unexplained explosion inside a Surprise home, it’s a miracle the situation didn’t end worse.
“We’re so lucky,” said Lexi Obrigewitch.
Obrigewitch, her boyfriend and their pet dog all left their home not long before the explosion occurred Tuesday night.
“It was all in God’s hands,” she said. “We somehow managed to come over to my parents’ home to eat that night. We weren’t going to, but something made us come over and eat.”
From down the block, they heard the blast that ended up destroying their house on Desert Mesa Drive.
“If we would have went home five minutes earlier, we could have been going right through that garage as that exploded,” said Obrigewitch.
The explosion shook neighbors and could be felt clear down the street.
“I thought that a truck, a very large vehicle had hit the front corner of our house,” said Steve Dorsey, who lives next door. “I walked outside the front door, and the single-port car garage was engulfed. Two neighbors had gone in to make sure the house was clear.”
No one was hurt in the fire.
Surprise firefighters managed to stop the flames from spreading to nearby homes, despite 25 mph wind gusts reported in the neighborhood at the time.
“They were absolutely amazing,” Obrigewitch said of the firefighters. “We can’t seriously thank them enough.”
The crews managed to pull a photo album untouched by fire from the couple’s living room.
“It’s just crazy that this survived out of everything,” said Obrigewitch, who told 3TV their fireproof safe with valuables inside was also saved.
Her neighbors are now thinking of their own valuables and safety plans.
“What are you doing with your pictures? What are you doing with the things that are important? It clearly defines what is important,” said Dorsey. “In this situation, they all got out safe and that’s the bottom line.”
A spokesman with the Surprise Fire Department said it could be another week before the cause is determined.
