PHOENIX -- A homeless man was kidnapped Tuesday night from a vacant house in Phoenix where he had been staying, according to police.

Police said two men entered the house near 31st Avenue and Buckeye Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. and accused 36-year-old Joel Lawhone of having inappropriate contact with their niece. They reportedly told him he was going to pay for it.

Lawhone was forced into a vehicle described as a 1990s, black Nissan Altima with a gray front bumper and body damage to the driver's side.

A 49-year-old woman who was staying in the house with Lawhone hung onto a fence and screamed as the intruders dragged her by her hair, police said. They let her go after she drew the attention of bystanders.

Police say they are concerned for Lawhone's welfare because there was a significant amount of blood inside the house.

The suspects are described as Hispanic men between 20 and 30 years old.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO.
