PHOENIX  -- Formal charges have now been filed against the armed man who was shot during a home invasion in Sun City Friday. That suspect was at the center of a large search that went on for hours.

33 year old Joshua Barnes faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of kidnapping, and one count of first degree burglary.

Detectives believe Barnes broke into a home near 111th Avenue and Peoria on Friday morning. According to the police report, he was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, and repeatedly  threatened to kill the homeowners, Dave and Audrey Sobely

"He put me on the floor, stomped on my head, and said, 'If you get up, I'll kill you," Sobely recalled.

"He held a gun right at me, right at me," his wife, Audrey, said, "And said if I moved, he'd kill me."

But turns out that Dave Sobely is an armed member of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's volunteer posse. While the suspect ransacked the house, looking for jewelry and gold, Sobely found his gun. Fearing for his and his wife's lives, he fired once, and said he knew immediately that he hit the intruder.

"I'm a former combat medic," says Sobely. "I know, when you shoot someone, they stagger backwards. He was staggering to get out of the house," he said.

Police say Barnes, although injured, was able to run away, leaving a trail of blood drops in his wake.

Deputies searched for Barnes for hours, eventually locating him at a nearby golf course. After being taken into custody, Barnes was taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital to be treated for the gunshot wound to his hand.

At this point, it's not clear if this was a random break-in or if the suspect targeted the Sun City home.

The Sobelys were not injured.

Due to the violent nature of the case, and the presumed flight risk, Barnes is being held without bond.
