PHOENIX -- Police have made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run collision Tuesday evening.
Phoenix police say they arrested 21-year-old Darren Darnelle Hanson for leaving the scene of the fatal collision at 23rd Avenue and Maryland.
The pedestrian who was struck and killed has been identified as 35-year-old Mathew James Helmick.
Police say on Tuesday, Jan. 28, shortly before 7:00 p.m., Helmick was crossing the roadway in an eastbound direction, when he was struck by a northbound Chrysler Pacific. The vehicle fled the scene without stopping to help.
Helmick was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Approximately 35 minutes after the collision, police say Hanson called the police to turn himself in.
Hanson was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
