PHOENIX -- A man who led authorities on a high-speed chase was in critical condition Friday night after crashing on a freeway off-ramp in north Phoenix, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
He was reportedly heading north in the left lane on State Route 51 and suddenly tried to exit at 32nd Street on his right, causing him to lose control. The vehicle rolled a few times before becoming pinned underneath a tree.
DPS said the driver was thrown from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to DPS, an officer suspected the driver was impaired and had tried to pull him over around 9 p.m.
Speeds reportedly reached more than 100 mph.
DPS said the Vehicular Crimes Unit and Special Investigations Unit will complete two separate investigations, one criminal and the other administrative.
The administrative investigation ensures policy and procedure were followed, and is routine for critical incidents, DPS said.
