MESA, Ariz. -- A local elementary school got a big surprise donation of school supplies from Target with the help of Phoenix's own Luis Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was on hand to present the sizable donation of supplies, honor teachers and inspire kids at Stevenson Elementary.

"For me personally, it's a unique experience because my mom was a school teacher," he told 3TV's Ryan O'Donnell, who was at the school for the festivities. "To have an opportunity to team up with Target and be out here today and see all these young kids, how excited they are ... that's what it's all about."

Each student will be taking home three age-appropriate books to encourage and challenge him or her to read over the summer. The teachers received $25 gift cards.

Two years ago, Target made over the library at Stevenson.

Through education-focused events like this one and its partnership with Major League Baseball, Target is on track to give $1 billion for education by the end of 2015.
