PHOENIX -- A Gilbert teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student pleaded not guilty Monday morning.

Gilbert police said Andrew James Teaters, 29, had sexual relations with a 17-year-old female student while on campus at Gilbert Early College. He was a sixth-grade teacher at the school.

According to court documents, the victim's father conducted a recorded telephone call to Teaters during which he admitted to having an inappropriate sexual relationship with the teen.

Teaters, of Mesa, was charged with two counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

His next court date is Aug. 22.
