PHOENIX -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords announced today that she will step down from the U.S. House of Representatives later this week and will not seek re-election when her current term expires.
Giffords made the announcement Sunday morning via social media. In a video message Giffords told her constituents that she plans to focus on her recovery. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said.
The congresswoman went on to say that she will return public service in the future. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.
Later this week Giffords will formally resign via a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and Governor Jan Brewer. A special election will be held later this year to allow Arizona voters to determine who will serve the remainder of Giffords' term.
