PHOENIX , Ariz. -- Friends, teammates and loved ones gathered at a vigil Tuesday night to remember a student athlete who drowned at an apartment complex pool Monday.

16-year-old Quentin Hoffman was a basketball player at Deer Valley High School. He drowned while swimming with friends in a pool that was just five feet deep. It happened before dawn Monday at the San Lagos complex pool near.

Tuesday night, more than 100 people gathered near the pool where Quentin died to hold a vigil and share memories about the teen.

Family members asked that we respect their privacy and not be present at the vigil.

Friends describe Quentin as a leader in the community and loved by everyone.

"I woke up to many texts from my friends saying he had passed it made a deep void in my heart," says Nathan Washington, Quentin's best friend. "It made me really sad i just didn't believe it. I had to get verification from someone. I just didn't feel like my brother actually died; it broke my heart"
This is an ongoing investigation pending autopsy results. We're told this appears to be a tragic accident
