PHOENIX -- A former Tempe police officer arrested for theft has pleaded guilty in the case.
Tempe police detectives arrested Aaron Smith last year after several items of police property went missing and money was taken from a lockbox.
Many of the stolen items were eventually found to be in Smith's possession. Police said Smith admitted to the crimes, explaining that he had been in very bad financial shape.
He was arrested on charges of theft, burglary and tampering with physical evidence in July.
Smith pleaded guilty to theft on Friday.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 7.
Smith had been with the Tempe Police Department for seven and a half years. He resigned from his position following his arrest.
