PHOENIX -- A former Scottsdale CPA has been convicted in a fraud case.
Maricopa County prosecutors say a jury Monday found Danny Wise guilty of 22 counts of theft and eight counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices. Jurors now are deciding if there are aggravated factors.
Wise was indicted in 2009 on 45 felony counts of theft and fraudulent schemes.
He was accused of stealing money that was to be forwarded to the Internal Revenue Service and other taxing authorities on behalf of his clients between April 2006 and May 2008.
Wise allegedly forged copies of canceled checks in an attempt to prove money was paid to those agencies.
Wise was also accused of conning more than 100 “investors” out of their money, by investing in his real-estate holdings. While Wise allegedly promised those investors a return of 12 to 20 percent, police said he never paid them a dime.
He was originally scheduled to stand trial in September 2009, but was granted 10 continuances.
